Encapsulating Live Cells

Avaí Bio has chosen Austrianova and its live-cell encapsulation technology, Cell-in-a-Box®, as its partner of choice in two joint venture companies to protect the cells Avaí identifies for development in critical and innovative treatments.

Protecting Our Cell-Based Therapies

The Cell-in-a-Box® technology is a means to protect, isolate, store and transport human and animal cells. This one-of-a-kind technology builds a porous capsule around the cells, allowing free diffusion of nutrients in, and waste products out, and also allowing any biological molecules synthesized by the cells to escape. Avaí Bio recognizes the many advantages to encapsulating its therapies.

Protects Transplanted Cells

Encapsulation shields therapeutic cells from the host’s immune system, preventing rejection or attack, which is critical for allogeneic (donor-derived) cells or xenogeneic (animal-derived) cells.

Enhances Cell Survival

The encapsulation material provides a protective barrier, maintaining cell viability by shielding cells from mechanical stress and hostile environments in the body.

It allows cells to secrete therapeutic molecules (e.g., insulin, α-Klotho protein) while controlling their release, ensuring sustained and targeted delivery without systemic side effects.

Controlled Release of Therapeutics
Prevents Cell Migration

Encapsulation confines cells to the intended site, reducing the risk of unintended migration or tumor formation, especially with stem cells or genetically modified cells.

Enables Long-Term Funtionality

By providing a stable microenvironment with nutrients and oxygen, encapsulation supports long-term cell function, critical for chronic conditions like diabetes or neurodegenerative diseases.

Since encapsulated cells are immunoisolated, patients may require little to no immunosuppressive drugs, lowering risks of infections or drug-related complications.

Reduces Need for Immunosuppression

Encapsulation materials like hydrogels or alginate are common, but are inferior to what Cell-in-a-Box® offers with its cellulose sulphate (a special kind of cotton) construction.

These encapsulation technologies can be tailored to be biocompatible and optimize cell function, improving therapeutic outcomes, but only the construction of Cell-in-a-Box® delivers the advantages necessary for success for Avaí Bio's treatment programs.
